Zeke:  History

 

Formation and Early Years (1992-1994):

Zeke formed in Seattle, Washington, in 1992, during the grunge era, but the band’s sound was rooted in high-energy punk rock, hardcore, and rock ‘n’ roll. Founding members included Marky Felchtone (vocals/guitar), Donny Paycheck (drums) and Dizzy Lee Roth (bass). Inspired by bands like Motörhead, the Ramones, and Black Flag, Zeke quickly became known for their fast-paced songs and aggressive live performances. 

 

Their debut album, Super Sound Racing (1994), released through IFA Records, established their reputation for short, fast songs with heavy punk and Heavy rock influences.

During this time the band fluctuated between members Mark Pierce came on as Bass Dizzy went to Guitar and the band became a 4 piece when SSR set to be recorded Mark Pierce decided to quit so the band recorded as a 3 piece. Kurt Colfelt was added on Bass after the recording and he and Dizzy were in the touring band up to Flat Tracker.

 

Rise in the Punk Scene (1995-2004):

Zeke released their second album, Flat Tracker (1996) through Scooch Pooch Records, which showcased their love for hot rods, motorcycle racing and speed, both musically and thematically. The album’s gritty sound and relentless energy solidified their standing in the punk scene. This album saw the departure of Dizzy Lee Roth and Kurt Colfelt, and the additions of Mark Pierce and 

Abe “Sonny” Manuel Riggs III.

In 1997, the band signed with Epitaph Records and released Kicked in the Teeth. This album introduced them to a broader audience, blending punk, hardcore, and classic rock influences. Tracks like “God of GSXR” and “Twisted” highlighted their signature blend of speed and heaviness.

In 1999, Dirty Sanchez  was released on Epitaph Records, an album that leaned into their rock ‘n’ roll influences. 

In 2001, Death Alley arrived via Aces & Eights Records, pushing the boundaries of punk with its harder, metallic edge. This Alum saw the departure of Mark Pierce for the second time and the addition of Diamond Jeff Matz.

In 2004 ’Til the Livin’ End was released on Relapse Records, a ferocious display of Zeke’s signature high-speed punk rock.

 

Hiatus and Return (2002-2016):

Following relentless touring and a demanding schedule, Zeke went on hiatus after the release of ‘Til the Livin’ End (2004). The album, released through Relapse Records, continued their tradition of high-energy punk and featured tracks like “Long Train Runnin’.”

 

During this period, the band’s lineup saw changes, with Marky Felchtone and Donny Paycheck remaining the consistent members they brought on Jeff Hiatt and Jason Freeman. They occasionally performed live, maintaining their cult status within the punk and hardcore community.

In 2016 Donny left the band due to an Injury.

 

Comeback and Hellbender (2016-Present): 

In 2018, after a 14-year gap, Marky returned with past member Kurt Colfelt on Bass, Kyle Whitefoot on 2nd Guitar and Dayne Porras on drums. Zeke released Hellbender through Relapse Records. The album, featuring 15 tracks, marked a triumphant return to their classic fast-and-furious sound. Songs like “Working Man” and “Hellbender” demonstrated their ability to stay true to their roots while appealing to longtime fans. 

In 2021 Donny Paycheck returns to the Drums and Middle Finger after a short break due to an injury. Kurt and Kyle departed the band and were replaced by Jeff Hiatt and Jason Freeman

The band resumed touring extensively, playing shows in the U.S., Europe, and Australia. Their high-energy live performances continue to be a hallmark of their reputation.

Blind Marky Felchtone, Donny Paycheck, Jason Freeman, Jeff Hiatt. 

 

 

Musical Style and Legacy:

Zeke is often described as the Godfathers of “Speed Rock”, blending punk, hardcore, and rock ‘n’ roll into an explosive package. Their songs are typically short, aggressive, and built around driving riffs, breakneck tempos, and snarling vocals. Over the years, they’ve shared stages with bands like Motörhead, Supersuckers, C.O.C.,Iron Maiden, Slipknot, Pearl Jam, L7, High on Fire and Dwarves.

 

With a discography spanning three decades, Zeke remains a significant influence in the punk and hardcore scenes. Their unwavering commitment to raw, unfiltered music has earned them a dedicated fan base and respect from peers in the industry.
